The Approach to Wine and Regional Enography
An Event Marking an Important Beginning
The Enoteca Culturale (Cultural Wine Cellar) of Altafiumara inaugurated its event calendar with the first of ten appointments dedicated to the world of Calabrian wine. The initiative is organized in collaboration with Matteo Gallello—wine chronicler, taster, lecturer, and co-founder of the magazines Bromio and Verticale.
Entitled “The Approach to Wine and Regional Wine Geography,” the event laid the foundation for a unique journey designed not only to educate but also to share the passion and culture surrounding wine.
This series of meetings, unfolding over the coming months, represents an unmissable opportunity for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of the bond between wine, territory, and history. Each event will focus on a specific theme, exploring aspects ranging from tasting techniques to the discovery of Calabrian terroirs, complete with guided tastings and custom-tailored culinary pairings.
A Sensory Journey Between Memory and Territory
A New Approach to Wine
Participants were immersed in a sensory journey, reflecting on the importance of memory and subjectivity during tasting. Throughout the event, discussions centered on how wine can become a tool for rediscovering oneself and the surrounding world, moving far beyond mere technical data such as alcohol content or aromatic notes.
The goal was to stimulate a deeper connection with wine, transforming it into a medium to tell stories, traditions, and territories.
Gallello emphasized:
"Tasting is not a mechanical skill, but an exercise in sensitivity and creativity. Wine teaches us to observe the world with fresh eyes, to question what we take for granted, and to discover the true value of sharing."
Winemaking Calabria
A Mosaic of Terroirs
A special focus was dedicated to Calabria, a region that stands out for its extraordinary geological and climatic variety. With over 12,000 hectares of vineyards, Calabria boasts around 350 indigenous grape varieties and an annual production of 400,000 hectoliters, split between 70% red wines and 30% white wines.
During the event, the region's main winemaking territories were explored, highlighting the unique characteristics that make its wines so special:
Cirò and Melissa: The homeland of Gaglioppo—the symbolic red grape variety of Calabria—and Greco Bianco. An area combining coastal and hillside influences, creating wines with an unmistakable balance.
Costa Viola and Pellaro: A rugged and fascinating area where terraced vineyards overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here, grape varieties such as Prunesta and Malvasia Nera give life to wines full of character.
Pollino and Locride: Districts rich in biodiversity, where historic varieties like Magliocco Dolce and Greco di Bianco find their ultimate expression.
This exploration was not limited to theory; it was enriched by a guided tasting that showcased the remarkable diversity of Calabrian terroirs.
Tastings and Pairings
The Perfect Encounter Between Wine and Cuisine
The heart of the event was the tasting of four exceptional labels, paired with unique dishes prepared by Chef Antonio Battaglia, specifically created to enhance the characteristics of each wine:
Cirò Rosato Vumbaca
Pairing: Focaccia with capicollo and cacciatora cream.
Notes: A fresh, vibrant, and versatile rosé, capable of enhancing the rustic, savory flavors of the capicollo.
Giramondo L’Acino
Pairing: Exotic prawn with pear, Zomarella apple, and citrus fruits.
Notes: A complex and aromatic wine, perfect for a dish combining freshness and sweetness with a touch of citrus acidity.
Mute Le Moire
Pairing: Lamb sushi ball glazed with blueberries, raspberries, pink pepper, and licorice.
Notes: An intense, structured red wine that pairs magnificently with the rich flavors of this unique dish.
Melfio Rosso 2022 Altomonte
Pairing: Lamb tortello, 80% dark chocolate, plums, and cacio cheese, served in a spiced tomato broth.
Notes: A wine with a bold and harmonious profile, capable of balancing the sweetness and complexity of the dish.
Each pairing was designed to create a dialogue between wine and cuisine, offering participants an unforgettable gastronomic experience.
